At the Azerbaijan Eurovision internal selection, organised by broadcaster ITV, the singer Diana Hajiyeva, known as DiHaj, was chosen to represent the country at the competition in Ukraine. DiHaj is a famous Azerbaijani indie pop and electronic singer and the lead vocalist of the band with the same name. At Eurovision 2017, she will perform “Skeletons”, a single that is bound to electrify the stage in Kyiv.
Born on 13 June 1989, in the capital city of Baku, Diana Hajiyeva is one of the most famous Azerbaijani electronic music singers and songwriters. She initially studied Choral Conducting at the Baku Music Academy. Later on, in 2010, she moved to London, where she enrolled in the Institute of Contemporary Music Performance. During her time there, Diana became involved in the local underground music scene.
Diana Hajiyeva first started performing while she was studying in London, when she became part of a progressive trance trio called Looper & Mancus. After returning to Azerbaijan, in 2014, she formed an electronic band called Dihaj, in which she is the lead vocalist. Diana is also accompanied by Ali on drums and Anar on electric guitar. The most popular hit of the band is “I Break Again”, written by Diana herself in collaboration with the famous Azerbaijani jazz pianist Isfar Sarabsky.
DiHaj’s band is very appreciated by critics due to its unique experimental style. Since its formation, the group has held live gigs at many important European music events and festivals, like Women in Paradise in Amsterdam, the Tbilisi Open Air, the Lithuanian Kulturos Naktis and the Georgian AlterVision.
The DiHaj Eurovision act, which will be performed live during the first Kyiv semi-final, on 9 May, brings something new to the competition, as it’s very different from all of the other entries. It is still to be seen whether or not the experimental and moody style of DiHaj’s hit “Skeletons” will be enough to secure her a place in the final on 13 May. Featuring strong electronic vibes complimented by Diana’s mesmerising voice, the single is the work of Isa Melikov and Sandra Bjurman, the very same composers who wrote Azerbaijan’s 2011 Eurovision entry, which won the competition.
Watch the first Eurovision 2017 Kyiv semi-final and see with your own eyes if history will repeat itself and Azerbaijan will win the contest again after their 2011 victory. Stay tuned for more exciting news on DiHaj and the rest of the Eurovision 2017 contestants.
