At this year’s Croatia Eurovision internal selection, it was decided that Jacques Houdek will be the one to wear the country’s flag to the competition in Kyiv. The 35-year-old singer and songwriter is a big Croatian star, being active since 2000. Jacques is best known as one of the judges in the TV show X Factor Croatia. He will participate at the Eurovision 2017 with the song “My Friend”.
Born in the city of Velika Gorica in 1981 as Željko Houdek, Jacques Houdek is one of the most famous Croatian singers of today. A well-liked public figure, Jacques is often nicknamed “Gospodin Glas/Mr. Voice”. After graduating from high school, the artist started attending the European seminars of the renowned Berklee College of Music. During his studies, he had the chance to be trained by Grammy Award nominee Donna McElroy.
Jacques Houdek performed for the very first time in 2000, in a club in Zagreb. He started out by covering popular songs. In 2002, he released his debut single, entitled "Čarolija" (Magic), and enlisted it for the national Eurovision preselection. Although he failed to be admitted to the Eurosong contest at that time, Houdek’s performance was remarked by maestro Zdravko Šljivac, who was astonished by the young singer’s voice and offered him a collaboration.
In 2004, Jacques released his first studio album, "Čarolija". Since then, he has produced 12 other widely-acclaimed albums. During his celebrated career, he has won numerous music awards at important festivals, like the Banjalučki festival, the Ohrid fest or the CMC festival. Moreover, he also obtained great results abroad. In 2011, he placed 4th in the Open Mic UK singing competition, held in London. Since 2015, Jacques is also a judge in the Croatian version of the popular talent show The Voice.
The Jacques Houdek Eurovision performance of the single “My Friend” is expected to make sensation during the second Ukraine semi-final, on 11 May. Released on 2 March, the song highlights the great artistic capabilities of “Mr Voice”. The lyrics cover themes such as the importance of friendship and unity. Seeing as Houdek is already a big star in Croatia and has an original style, it’s quite likely that he’ll make it to the Kyiv grand finale.
