Macedonia in Eurovision 2017: Jana Burčeska to compete in Kyiv

At the F.Y.R. Macedonia Eurovision national selection, organised internally by the Macedonian Radio Television, the young pop singer Jana Burčeska was chosen to perform her new single “Dance Alone” on the stage in Kyiv. The artist is known all over the country for her participation in the TV show Macedonian Idol, where she placed fifth.

Born on 6 July 1993 in the capital city of Skopje, Jana Burčeska is one of the most prominent young female voices in Macedonia. Virtually any Macedonian has heard of Jana, as she participated in the large-audience television programme Macedonian Idol. In 2016, she became an ambassador for UNICEF, a position from which she fought publicly against violence in schools.

Jana Burčeska’s first contact with the showbiz world was in 2010 when she appeared on the first and only edition of the TV show Macedonian Idol. During the televised competition, she managed to charm the viewers with her original interpretations of iconic hits like Aretha Franklin’s “Think”, The Beatles’ “I Saw Her Standing There” or Blondie’s “Call Me”.

In spite of the fact that she didn’t win the Macedonian Idol, her spectacular performances brought her quite a big fan base. In 2012, Tijana released her most successful hit so far, “Bi Bila Tvoja”, which she performed on the stage at the Skopje Festival.

The Jana Burčeska Eurovision entry, “Dance Alone”, is a very energising and inspiring tune, featuring some uplifting lyrics. The song will be performed live on the Eurovision stage on 11 May, during the second semi-final. Tijana stands quite a good chance of advancing to the final and making Macedonians proud at this year’s Eurosong contest, as “Dance Alone” is the work of the musicians Joacim Perrson, Alex Omar, Florence A. and Bobi-Leon Milanov. The four composers are part of the group Symphonix International, known for producing Austria’s 2014 winning hit “Rise Like a Phoenix” and Bulgaria’s 2016 entry, “If Love Was a Crime”, which placed 4th in the contest.
